Influences

A happy mid-January to you all! I have many thoughts in my mind and on my heart today. Earlier in the week, I was part of a conversation in the 7th & 8th grade room, and I’ve been ruminating on it. We were talking about influences around us and the importance of knowing who we are as children of God, so the world is less of an influence on us. What surrounds us is of upmost importance…what we watch, what we listen to, who we admire, what holds our attention, who we spend time with, what we read, all of those things and more shape our character.

This morning I read two passages in the Bible that really drove home what I wanted to share in my view this week. Proverbs 2:2-4 says, “Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding. Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding. Search for them as you would for silver, seek them like hidden treasures.” And then Matthew 12:33, “A tree is identified by its fruit. If a tree is good, its fruit will be good. If a tree is bad, its fruit will be bad.” I’m praying this week for our young people, who are surrounded with a million influences, to seek out positive, godly influences. My greatest desire is for our kids to be those “good trees” and to be known by their “good fruit.”
