Life Lesson

Happy End of February to you all! Last night, I had another one of those God moments I’d like to share with you today. Each evening, if my schedule permits, Howard, my dog, takes me on a walk. I say he takes me on a walk because Howard determines the direction we walk, how far we walk, and how long we walk. His main goals are to sniff where other dogs have walked, do his business, and devour as many rabbit droppings as he can find. On the nights that we don’t get to walk, Howard has a hard time settling down for the evening and becomes very alert every time I move in the hopes that I’m going to grab his leash for a walk. We weren’t able to go out on Monday or Tuesday evening, so he was very excited to leave the house last night and head out for a stroll. When we got just passed our house, a car turned onto our street and either ran over a rock or some other small object that made a popping sound similar to a firecracker. At that point, the walk was over. Howard is terrified of fireworks so thinking there had been some kind of explosion, he turned around and headed up the driveway into the house. No coaxing could convince him to keep walking. His fear, even though it wasn’t reality, ended his evening walk quite abruptly.

If only Howard could have understood my words and come to the realization that the sound was just a rock and not an explosion, he would have enjoyed walking in the neighborhood instead of being stuck in the house last night. I am not unlike Howard though. Once fear sets in my mind, I can’t be convinced the fear might only a perceived misunderstanding and if I could just address the fear, I would learn the truth and save myself a lot of worry and stress. Thanks for the life lesson, Howard. I needed it this week.

I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Psalm 34:4 ESV
